Affiliating with OHST
Graduate students in any department can affiliate with OHST. OHST provides workspace in its reading room, runs several lecture and discussion series, and keeps up a close intellectual community. If you are interested, contact Diana Wear. Or to just join the mailing list, contact the Office.
Berkeley-UCSF Colloquia
All students are encouraged to attend the Berkeley/UCSF Colloquium in History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, which meets roughly biweekly on Mondays from 4-6 PM. You can always find the schedule here. If you would like 1 unit of credit (S/U) for attending, whatever department you come from, you can enroll in History 299. First and second year students in the History doctoral program are required to enroll.
The colloquia help foster intellectual community and countervail the tendency in academic work toward social isolation and excessive specialization. Contact Cathy Carson if you would like to meet with a particular speaker or go out to dinner after the talk. Suggestions for speakers and topics can also be addressed to Cathy Carson.
OHST visiting scholars and graduate students organize a series of presentations on their work and research. Talks are open to interested faculty and students each Wednesday at 12pm.
Book reviews
If you are interested in reviewing books for Historical studies in the physical and biological sciences, ask the current review editor, Stephanie Young, for more information. You can also look at the available books on the shelf in 543 Stephens, but do not take books without first contacting Stephanie.
Science, Technology, and Society Center
The Science, Technology, and Society Center promotes research and discussion of STS issues at Berkeley, and provides information and resources on events and opportunities in the field. History of science students often find its offerings helpful. It also sponsors a graduate student working group in science studies.
