CALL FOR PAPERS

PLEASE FORWARD TO INTERESTED PARTIES AND MAILING LISTS

Due to a server glitch, some submissions were not received. If you submitted a proposal and have not received an acknowledgment, please resend to Margaret Olney <molney@uclink4.berkeley.edu>.

This spring's meeting of the West Coast History of Science Society will be held from Friday, April 27, through Sunday, April 29. West Coast HSS is an informal and supportive gathering that particularly welcomes graduate students, postdocs, and independent scholars. It rotates among West Coast schools, meeting this time at UCLA. Participants from beyond the West Coast are warmly encouraged to attend.

This year's gathering will be wrapped around a session of the Southern California Colloquium in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology on Saturday, April 28. We invite you to put the event on your calendar and submit paper and panel proposals.

Traditionally, West Coast HSS combines sessions of individual papers and panels on topics of historiographic or professional interest. We are eagerly seeking proposals in both categories.

PAPERS

Oral presentations should be about 15-20 minutes in length, so as to leave time for questions and discussion. We will also be glad to accept thematic groupings of papers. If you wish to be considered for a place on the program, please send the following information by e-mail to Margaret Olney (molney@uclink4.berkeley.edu):

    Name
    Affiliation
    Paper title
    1-paragraph abstract
    AV equipment needed

SESSIONS

Sessions are intended to explore issues that are predominantly historiographic or professional. They should include, if possible, individuals from several locations and at different points on the scholarly trajectory. Formal presentations should not fill more than half the time of the session, leaving ample time for discussion. Last year's sessions included:

  • Rethinking the Scientific RevolutionChinese Science and Society in the Twentieth Society: New Trends in HistoriographyApplying History of Science Outside the Classroom
  • Historicizing Objectivity: The Values of Science and Its Public Credibility
Previous sessions have dealt with innovative recent books (a review symposium), uses of the internet in history of science, and scholarly publishing. All sorts of proposals are welcomed. We are continuing with brainstorming (and, where necessary, arm twisting), and you should allow your imagination to roam freely. If you would like to float an idea, please contact the program chair, Cathy Carson of UC Berkeley (clcarson@socrates.berkeley.edu), who will gladly matchmake as well.

Session proposals should then be submitted to Margaret Olney (molney@uclink4.berkeley.edu).
Please provide the following information:

For the session:
    Session title
    Organizer
    Chair or commentator (if any)
    Participants
For each participant (can be sent together or separately):
    Name
    Affiliation
    Session title
    Paper title
    1-paragraph abstract
    AV equipment needed

LOGISTICS

A slot will be reserved on the program for interest group meetings. If you would like to schedule one, contact Cathy Carson (clcarson@socrates.berkeley.edu).

If you submit a proposal, you will be notified a few days after the closing date. The preliminary program will be posted and distributed in early April.

UPDATE ON REGISTRATION: With the preliminary program will go out a call for registration. Registration for those seeking lodging in Los Angeles will be accepted up until Tuesday, April 17. Registration for those who can find lodging on their own will be accepted up until Tuesday, April 24. Bob Frank of UCLA (rfrankj@ucla.edu) is the local arrangements chair. Other than meals and lodging, WCHSS will have no fees this year.

Subsidized accommodations and travel grants may be available for graduate students, postdocs, and independent scholars who are on the program -- although we do hope you will help us stretch the money by first requesting finances from your own institution. Details about WCHSS grants will be made available when the program is posted. We hope institutions will also look for ways to help their own students attend.

Information about the WCHSS meeting will be available at http://ohst7.berkeley.edu/Conferences/WCHSS2001/ (this page).

For the Southern California Colloquium "Science, Technology and Economic Development: How Tight is the Fit?" on Saturday, April 28, visit http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/history/jacob/colloquium/

Last year's program is available at http://ohst7.berkeley.edu/conferences/wchss_program.html

If you are an independent scholar and would like to be added to the WCHSS mailing list, please send your name and e-mail address to molney@uclink4.berkeley.edu.

We look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles in April for a gathering with the usual pleasant mixture of scholarship and conviviality!

    Best wishes,

    Bob Frank (UCLA)
    Cathy Carson (UC Berkeley)
