Becoming Disabled: Civil War Veterans and the Politics of Infirmity

For soldiers fighting in the Union forces during the Civil War, invalid pensions went from being a stopgap measure to bolster reenlistment to the single largest expenditure of the federal government in the decades following the war. The changing cultural construction of veteran disability and its enduring political ramifications are examined, utilizing data collected by the Bureau of Pensions, the Census Bureau, and contemporary accounts.
