Assessing Microscopes: Changing Practices of Comparison and the Emergence of Test Objects
The first part of this talk is about long-term changes of the principles of assessing microscopes (17th-19th century). The second part examines the introduction of test objects in the early 19th century to eludicate how specific criteria for assessing microscopes were negotiated. I argue that this two-fold history raises intriguing epistemological questions and consider its significance for philosophical concerns with scientific practice.
