Put a Tiger in Your Test Tube: Naturalists, Experimentalists, and the Comparative Perspective 1900-1965

In this presentation, Bruno J. Strasser will look at the intersection between laboratory science and field natural history in the first half of the 20th century. While these two traditions have been described as growing largely separate and independent, an exploration of their enduring connections explains how the values and practices of natural history transformed the experimental enterprise. The present proliferation of large scale biological collections, such as genomics databases, encompassing more species than any natural history museum, represents the most recent outcome of this transformation.
