Information for authors on disk preparation
GENERAL INFORMATION:
- Articles should be supplied on a disk or sent by e-mail to diana@berkeley.edu.
- Label disks clearly with journal name, volume, issue, and author name. Include the name and version number of the program that was used to create the file.
- Manuscripts should be provided in Microsoft Word format, in a version no higher than Word 98. If saving the file in Word format is not possible, save it in Rich Text Format.
- The version of the article on the disk provided should be the final, completed version. The double-spaced print-out of the manuscript should match exactly what is on the disk. Errors resulting from discrepancies between hard copy and disk are costly to fix in page proofs and can delay schedules significantly.
- All pieces of article: text, footnotes, references, tables, etc. should be in a single computer file folder. Captions should be grouped together in a single file.
- Delete all old versions of files or unrelated files from the disk before sending.
- Tables should be provided as separate computer files, and should also be provided as hard copy. If they are particularly complicated, please supply them in typeset form (which can be reduced or enlarged to fit the text size).
- Run your word-processing program's spell-check function when your article is finished. However, remember, that while this will catch most typos, it won't catch homonyms for the correct word, or typos that change the correct word into another word.
CHARTS, GRAPHS, FIGURES, MAPS, ILLUSTRATIONS:
Art should not be embedded in a word-processing program.
Art that has been created on the computer should be supplied as both:
1. high quality (not bitmapped) camera-ready copy
This will be reduced or enlarged to fit within the text. Avoid using very fine gray screens or bars or very thin (hairline) rules AND2.a. a digital file in the EPS format if you have access to the technology and are comfortable with it. (This includes Freehand or Illustrator files and is especially useful for us when art comes from applications like Excel, Harvard Graphics, and other programs with chart and graphic representation features. Convert text in EPS illustrations to outlines.) OR
2.b. a disk copy of the image and its font in the original application used to create it.
Line art that is scanned should be scanned between 900-1270 dpi, and saved in TIFF format. We can't guarantee print-quality of art supplied in GIF or JPEG format, although these may be usable.
PHOTOS:
All photos should be supplied as black and white glossies. If photos must be supplied as scans, or if you have any other questions concerning artwork, contact us at the office.
